Virheellisesti lähes yleistermiksi monenlaiselle hieman pirteämmälle ja melodisemmalle konemusiikille muodostunut tyylisuunta. Trance mielletään yleensä lähinnä kahdella eri tavalla. Ensimmäinen vaihtoehto on 4/4-tahtilajissa kulkevaa, hitaasti rakentuvaa ja melko vähämelodista musiikkia, jossa tunnelma luodaan toistolla ja elementtien pienillä muutoksilla. Tässä tapauksessa kappaleet ovat usein melko pitkiä. Toinen trancen muoto on ambientin suuntainen leijuntamusiikki, jossa pyritään nimensä mukaisesti saattamaan kuuntelija transsitilaan. Tätä määritelmää kuulee käytettävän vain harvakseltaan.
