The bra that uses infrared technology to detect breast cancer

Thanks to advances in wearable tech our clothes are getting smarter by the second: our coats can double as electric blankets, our wristbands can tell us how many calories we've burned and we can make calls through our watches. Now our clothes are being used to detect cancerous cells.

Scientists at a university in Colombia have invented a bra fitted with infra-red sensors that can detect breast cancer. Fusion reports that the bra uses these sensors to monitor breast temperatures and warns the wearer if there is an irregularity in temperature, as cancerous cells have a higher temperature.

“When you have cells in your mammary glands that are anomalous, the body needs to send more blood to that specific part of the body, and the temperature of this organ increases,”Maria Camila Cortes, an electrical engineering student at Colombia’s National University, explained to Fusion.

The bra will do a scan when it is first put on, and it will give you a green light if there are no problems, a yellow light if you need to do it again and a red light signals you need to visit a doctor.

This bra doesn't mean you can skip seeing a doctor, but aims to detect cancers in the early stages. “We don’t want to replace a doctor’s job,” a researcher told Fusion. “The idea is to develop a technique that will help with [early] detection.” It also keeps a record of temperatures, so doctors have a number of readings to consult.

The bra is not available to purchase yet, because it's still in testing stages at the university, but the scientists insist they plan for it to be affordable.
