Meet Monocrafft - the brand for minimalist jewellery fans who still want an edge

There's been a movement recently in the jewellery world away from chunky pieces and more towards delicate chains and minimalism. Which is good news - but can sometimes feel a bit bland. So if you like your silver chains with a little edge, meet Monocrafft - a new jewellery brand by Netherland native Merrel Westhoff.

Westhoff refers to her pieces of jewllery as ‘soldiers’ and you can see why. The range is centred around bold, minimal, almost utilitarian pieces. From necklaces and rings, to chokers and boot cuffs, and single earrings that hang from your ear off a delicate chain, it’s the ultimate cool-girl jewellery, for those who favour layering and stacking but want to do so with a little edge.

“I think because of the timeless, minimal designs people with steady personal taste like it as they know they will still like it ten years from now,” Westhoff tells The Telegraph. “I see my customers as collectors, as all my collections are mixable." She's right. Without a stone or gem in sight, Monocrafft is the the type of jewellery you wear around the clock, reworking from office to evening.

Using sterling silver, 14kt yellow gold and 14kt rose gold, each piece is handmade - Westhoff started her jewellery brand because she finds working with her hands therapeutic - and thus utterly unique. “I didn’t like my full time job anymore, so I just thought let’s give is a try and see how this whole thing works out. I never thought about having my own company; I just loved to make beautiful little sparkles,” Westhoff tells The Telegraph.

I stumbled upon Westhoff’s treasure trove a couple of years ago while down an Instagram rabbit hole. I was instantly drawn in by the stream of cool snaps, not only of her latest creations, but also of her sources of inspiration and workshop. “You really need to stand out and develop your own DNA,” says Westhoff. “Every decision, design and strategy comes from my gut feeling, which makes Monocrafft super personal as there is only one me.” Inspired by anything from the cities she visits, to music, to shadows, Westhoff never draws her collection upfront. “I like to be surprised by what comes out during the process.”

Westhoff sells her jewellery in Amsterdam, New York, LA and London. Shipping within Europe costs €11, but a selection of pieces are now available to buy from Clerkenwell in London.

Other minimal jewellery brands you need to know about

Rebecca Gladstone

Rebbeca Gladstone was spotted a few years ago at a Christmas market by founder of Magpie on the Run, Nina Elegba. Elegba, who formed the online retail platform in 2014, did so as a means of sharing the jewellery designers she encountered on her travels with fellow jewellery lovers. At the time Gladstone was making pieces from brass and wood, but she now works from her studio in Hackney making delicate, unobtrusive pieces from sterling silver.

Pieces range from £20 to £65 and are available to buy from Magpie on the Run.

Sarah & Sebastian

Clean lines counterbalanced by intricate design make up Australian design duo Sarah & Sebastian’s covetable collections. Hand made in Sydney, their delicate jewellery appeals to a sentimental side, while remaining versatile and wearable. These pieces are perfect paired with a simple white tee, or for evening to accessorise a dramatic jumpsuit or compliment a moody lip.
