Elari Keasley: All Change

Everything changes
nothing stays the same
Things change, people change
times change, you and I change
History is rewritten
memories are forgotten
Everything turns to dust
Every bright candle must go out

The next time you walk around your home town
take a good look around
for soon it will all be gone
soon it will all be burned to the ground
Every machine will break down one day
every child will stop crying
every jester will lose his smile
every star will dissipate
The next time you’re with your loved ones
be sure to cherish those moments
for soon they will all be gone
and you slowly lose your grip on the fading memories
Soon you’ll regret all those things that you said
you’ll wish you had always been there
despite the fights, the blame, everything else
All that mourning in advance was just you lying to yourself
The next time you lie awake in your bed
try to remember that you are still there
but only for another short while
for soon you too will be dead
And when you do go, you’ll lose all that you have:
your possessions, your job, everyone you know
Can’t take souvenirs, can’t take your house
can’t take your money, can’t take your car
It’s up to you if you’ll be full of regrets
or if you’ll be one of the few who will actually be content
There are three things that matter when it’s time for you to part:
what’s in your head, what’s in your soul, what’s in your heart
You can’t stop time
the degrading machine doesn’t shine
What have you done the past twenty years?
Have you been adrift, have you held back your fears?
Another decade is gone
more dreams turned to stone
what’s left, what will it be
an active nothing or a standstill wheel?
One stroke of bad luck and you die in your sleep
the questions are deep, the questions are many
the answers nowhere to be found
The conundrums endlessly float round and round
A hundred decades from now
wars will still be waging on
All our pleas are in vain
our lousy attempts for change shall all fail
Once God grows tired of this mess
and dooms worlds 'til none are left
will time stop, will moons drop
can there be a new dawn?
Why must we live in scorn?
Why must we lash out at God?
Why must we cry over love?
Why must we put up with war?
Soon we are memories
then names in a registry
then shells in cemeteries
then wasted opportunities

Nothing ever changes
everything stays the same
Everything comes and goes
everything turns to stone
A circle without an end
rolls round and round
Time after time
we say goodbye.
